Important Worldwide Security Alert for U.S. Travelers
Table of Contents
The U.S. Department of State has issued an updated Worldwide Caution, replacing the previous version dated July 2, 2018. This update provides U.S. citizens with general guidance on threats such as terrorism, political unrest, and crime overseas and practical steps to stay informed and prepared for emergencies while abroad.
Terrorist attacks, political violence (including protests), criminal acts, and other incidents often occur without warning. Travelers are strongly advised to remain alert, stay informed, and always exercise good situational awareness. Before leaving the U.S., check country-specific Travel Advisories and safety information at travel.state.gov.

Current Threat Environment
Terrorist groups such as ISIS, al-Qa'ida, their affiliates, and individuals inspired by them continue to target U.S. citizens worldwide. These actors use both traditional and improvised methods, ranging from firearms and knives to vehicle attacks, to strike "soft" targets, including:
Major public events and gatherings
Hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues
Places of worship and schools
Markets, malls, and tourist areas
Public transit and airports
There are also ongoing risks of kidnappings, often for ransom or political leverage, especially in areas with terrorist or guerrilla activity. Concerns persist around potential airline attacks involving concealed explosives or hijackings.
Legal and Safety Reminders
U.S. citizens are advised not to travel to foreign countries to engage in armed conflicts. Supporting or fighting for designated terrorist organizations is a criminal offense and may result in severe legal consequences, including imprisonment and fines.
